Little League Rule 1.06 and Breakaway Bases

The use of breakaway bases is mandated to minimize the risk of lower leg injuries, which were more common with traditional stationary bases. By allowing the base to dislodge upon impact, players are less likely to experience severe injuries during aggressive plays.

• Breakaway Bases Required: All leagues must use breakaway bases. These are designed to reduce the risk of injury by disengaging from their anchor when a player slides into them with significant force.
• Base Specifications: The breakaway bases must be installed and maintained according to the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure they function properly and provide the intended safety benefits.
• Implementation Deadline: Leagues were required to implement breakaway bases by the start of the 2008 season. This rule aims to prevent injuries, particularly those caused by hard slides into stationary bases.
